Narrative

VLADIMIR PROPP (A Russian critic who examined 100s of examples of folk
tales to see if they shared. any structures. His book on this 'Morphology of theFolk Tale' was first published in 1928) Propp looked at 100s of folk tales and identified 8 character roles and 31 narrative functions.
The 8 character roles are:-
1. The villain(s)
2. The hero
3. The donor - who provides an object with some magic property.
4. The helper who aids the hero.
5. The princess (the sought for person) - reward for the hero and object of the villain's schemes.
6. Her father - who rewards the hero.
7. The dispatcher - who sends the hero on his way.
8. The false hero

Theory shown:-
The character roles and the functions identified by Propp can be applied to most movies and movie genre but the easiest type of film to show this is in Disney films, I'm going to be using Cinderella as a way to show Propp's theory. Its about a girl (the princess)who's father has dies and has left her with her evil stepmother and her two step sisters (villain's) a fairy godmother helps the girl go to the ball (the donor) she goes to the ball where she meets the prince (the hero) who has been forced to find a bride from his father (father) he comes to her house with the slipper to make her his bride but her stepmother traps her, she is then saved by her friends (the helper) the prince saves her from her evil step mother and they live happily ever after.

TZVETAN TODOROV (Bulgarian structuralist linguist publishing influential
work on narrative from the 1960s onwards) Todorov suggested that stories begin with an equilibrium or status quo where any potentially opposing forces are in balance. This is disrupted by some event, setting in chain a series of events. Problems are solved so that order can be restored to the world of the fiction.

Theory shown:- this theory seems to be shown easiest through action and thriller films. So ill be using Cloverfield:- Cloverfield is a 2008 American monster movie directed by Matt Reeves, produced by J. J. Abrams and written by Drew Goddard. The film follows five young New Yorkers attending a going-away party on the night that a gigantic monster attacks the city.
The equilibrium or status quo in this film is when they are having the fair well party for one of the male characters who is moving away. the event that disrupts this is when, there is a huge earthquake and the monster attacks the city. This is solved when the monster dies.
